What do you think the most essential thing for survival…? Food? Cash? Fame? Water? Obviously, it is water.

Chemically, it is a tasteless and odourless liquid at room temperature. Our adult human body comprises of about 60% of water, the brain and hearts contains 73%, the lungs comprises 83%, skin contains 64%, muscles and kidneys contains 79% and even the bones contains 31% .

It is indeed precious for our body. Let us learn the benefits of them.

1. Lubrication of joints

We all know that synovial fluid helps in lubrication of joints. Those fluids are primarily made of water. Hence,it keeps our joints flexible and lubricated.

The joints shock-absorbing ability gets affected when there is a dehydration for longer term.

2. Cushioning of brain and spinal cord

Dehydration affects the brain`s physiology. Brain is the master mind which involves in production of hormones and neurotransmitters.

Prolonged dehydration limits the reasoning and thinking functions.

3. It aids in digestion

There is a misconception that drinking water during or after a meal affects the digestion process. Definitely its not true.

Actually it helps in smooth functioning of our digestive system and also helps in breaking down of food substances into smaller molecules.

It prevents us from acidic nature, constipation, heartburn and stomach ulcers and also helps in softening of the stool.

4. Water Regulates body temperature

Generally, our body lose water in the form of sweat in the hot environments. So, staying hydrated is much important to maintain our body temperature. It is stored in the middle layers of the skin.

When we get exposed to heat, it moves out to skin`s surface and gets evaporated and when it evaporates, it does cool our body.

5. Formation of saliva and mucus 

Saliva constitutes about 98% water that contains electrolytes, mucus, antibacterial compounds and various enzymes.

Saliva keeps the eyes, nose and mouth moist and also helps in digestion process.

6. Helps excrete waste through perspiration, urination, and defecation

In our body, the sweat, urination and the bowel movements takes place with the help of water.

Our body need to replenish the lost fluids through sweat.

7. Prevents kidney damage

The kidneys regulates the fluid in our body. With inadequate water to them, it results in kidney stones and other problems.

8. Water Improves blood oxygen circulation

Blood comprises of about more than 90% of this amazing liquid. It transports helpful oxygen and nutrients to our entire body. Staying hydrated will improve our blood circulation.

9. Regulates blood pressure

With dehydration, blood doesn’t have much of this vital fluid. So, the blood becomes thicker that leads to increase in blood pressure.

10. Key element in nutrient absorption

Apart from digestion, it helps dissolve minerals, vitamins and other nutrients present in our food.

Eventually, it delivers them to the rest of our body.

11. Improves physical performance

Drinking plenty of water is mandatory during physical activity. During a physical activity, athletes perspire up to 6-10% of body weight.

Exercising without adequate water level in the heat results in certain medical conditions like decreased blood pressure and hyperthermia.

Severe dehydration could bring seizures and even death.

12. Prevents from illness

Intake of adequate water actually prevents certain conditions like constipation, kidney stones, exercise-induced asthma, urinary-tract infections and increased blood pressure.

13. Water Helps to lose weight

Drinking much water during exercise and dieting may help to lose extra weight.

Also, preloading with water before a meal prevents us from overeating as it causes sense of fullness.

14. Role in cognitive function

A good hydration plays a vital role in our cognition. It helps in keeping our cognitive function in good shape which includes concentration, alertness, and short-term memory.

15. Prevents dehydration

Dehydration occurs when our body doesn’t have enough water. It is crucial and essential to several functions in our body.

Severe dehydration can be very dangerous and results in so many complications which includes swelling in our brain, renal failure, seizures.
