The method of warm vertical compaction for the obturation of the root canal filling material is gaining popularity due to its efforts to condense densely even in the lateral and accessory canals.

The method works based on the use of systems operated at 2000C or hand pluggers heated to a mean temperature of 1400C.

Once the gutta-percha is compacted along with root canal sealers there is efficient sealing as they help in preventing micro-leakage.


  • Gives a dimensionally stable root canal filling.
  • Dense condensation.
  • Efficient filling of irregularities, lateral and accessory root canals.
  • Adequate seal.
  • Longevity of the treated teeth.

The major disadvantage of this technique is the heat used in the manipulation of the gutta-percha points.

Though results are obtained that a warm compacted gutta-percha provides a good seal than a cold gutta-percha. The influence heat during compaction can affect the physical & chemical properties of the root canal sealers.

Evidence suggests that heat does not affect the physical or chemical properties of the root canals.

Hence the study proposes the evaluation of certain properties of the root canal sealers when exposed to heat. The heat range used for evaluation started from 37-degree Celcius to 160 degrees Celcius.

The following root canal sealers were used for the evaluation:

  1. ZOE based root canal sealers.
  2. Epoxy resin-based sealers.
  3. Silicate based sealers.
  4. Calcium silicate-based root canal sealers.

What the study inferred?


The setting time of the ZOE sealers increased with the increase in temperature whereas the other tested root canal sealers showed reduced setting time with the increase in temperature.


The flow rate of the epoxy resin-based sealers increased with an increase in temperature while the silicate-based and calcium silicate-based sealers had a reduced flow rate.

ZOE based sealers remained unaffected with the increase in the temperature.


Only ZOE based and calcium silicate-based sealers showed a reduction in the porosity while the other evaluated root canal sealers were not significant.


On observation, the epoxy-based sealers, Calcium silicate-based sealers & silicate-based sealers showed a significant influence on the change in physical properties with an increase in temperature.

Thus influencing the quality and outcome of the obturation done through a warm vertical compaction technique.
