Nowadays health mix drinks like Horlicks, Boost, Ensure, Complan, Bournvita, Pediasure are consumed by kids and adults in general. In this article, we are going to see about the ingredients of these health mixes and their functions in our bodies. Most importantly, depending on the nutritional requirement we have to consume these health mixes. Also, every health mix has some special functions. It can be understood by the nutrients present in it.

Moreover, these health mixes are available for every age group depending on the need. For instance, children need more proteins and carbs for their growth whereas an adult needs more carbs to gain energy for their daily activity. Likewise, senior citizens need more calcium for bone strengthening purposes. Further, we also need some nutrients like vitamins, amino acids, fats etc. which the body cannot synthesize by itself.


Now let us try to understand more about the ingredients of these widely used health mix drinks.


Carbohydrate 74 gms of carbohydrates in 32 gm of sucroseIt gives us instant energy that helps to carry out our daily activities both mentally and physically. Sucrose is broken down into glucose and fructose. This breakdown of molecules provides ATP necessary for our cells to carry out their functions. The body needs 310 grams of carbs per day.
Protein10 gmsIt’s because the enzymes that help in digestion is composed of proteins. 0.8g of protein is needed per kg of humans bodyweight.

Pottasium 300 mg (0.3g)Potassium helps in maintaining nutrient exchange, muscle contractions and nerve signals. An adult need 3500 to 4700 mg of Potassium every day.
Sodium and chloride145 mg and 180 mg respectivly Sodium is an electrolyte that helps to maintain water balance. Chloride helps to maintain blood pressure and ph level in our body. Sodium chloride also prevents dehydration.Sodium – 920 mg to 2300 mg per day

  • Boost consists energy providing ingredients like carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, zinc, copper, calcium, magnesium and iodine.
  • Compared to horlicks, boost contains a high amount of carbohydrate that gives instant energy. While having heavy sports practices carbs helps us by maintaining our stamina level.
  • It also contains more amount of fat than Horlicks. But, it has a low amount of protein when compared to Horlicks.


  • Pediasure contains more protein and fats when compared to both Horlicks and Boost. It contains 14.01g of protein and 17g of fats.
  • Pediasure also contains other elements like carbohydrates, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, vitamins, amino acids, chromium, copper etc…
  • It helps in brain and immunity development. Kids can have this health mix to enhance development.

In conclusion, health mixes contain some of the nutrients requirements of the body. But, it doesn’t contain the entire need of our body. There are certain things that cannot be produced by our bodies. Food is required to compensate for those needs. So we should not skip our food at any cost. It contains our nutrient requirements that help to develop our body’s immune system and enhance metabolic activity.

To sum up, health drinks can be used as an adjuvant to a daily balanced and healthy diet to reap the maximum results.
