Invisalign – How Does it Correct Your Teeth

2 min

Invisalign is an alternative treatment option for orthodontic braces they are transparent/invisible trays made out of plastic.

They work based on the mechanism of the computerized model developed after scanning the patient’s teeth.

These computerized models plan the outcomes of the orthodontic treatment.

The assessment of the desired position of the teeth is done prior to the treatment. According to the assessment the aligners are distributed to the patient at intervals.

INDICATIONS:

  • Mild to moderate crowding of the front teeth.
  • Mild to a moderate spacing of the front teeth.
  • For patients facing relapse after a fixed orthodontic treatment.

An aligner is mostly not recommended in severe malocclusion.

HOW INVISALIGN WORKS?

Consult your dentist for all the available options to correct your irregularly aligned teeth.

Mention your consideration and get to know about the available options for your eligibility for Invisalign.

The dentist providing the facility must be an Invisalign certified dentist. Once the dentist assures that your alignment can be corrected with Invisalign your dental impressions are taken.

A digital tooth scan is usually done to have accuracy. Invisalign has its own software that analyses and gives outcomes for the desired tooth position. Then the aligner is made as per the instructions of the software model.

The duration of the treatment is 1 to 1 ½ years. The aligner is worn for 20-24 hours every day; it is only removed while eating, brushing or flossing. The aligner is changed after every 2 weeks once the desired movement is achieved.

Invisalign attachments: These are attachments or buttons bonded to the teeth.

They are translucent or tooth-colored. Usually, Invisalign is wire-free and metal-free but in certain malocclusion the use of rubber band for anchorage is necessary.

Hence a well-informed patient is more cooperative as he/she knows their condition and the need for the use of attachments in this technique. These tooth-colored attachments/buttons are bonded to the tooth in certain locations to provide stability to the aligners.

They act as anchorage points that help in applying force to the aligner in the desired direction or to introduce rubber bands for treatment.

The patient feels pain and discomfort due to the snug fit of the Invisalign because of the use of bands and attachments.

They face difficulty in removing and wearing the aligner. The band might cause irritation, food accumulation and difficulty in oral hygiene maintenance.

How Much Do Invisalign Cost

In India, the cost of an Invisalign ranges from rupees 1,00,000 to 4,00,000 which is quite cheap when compared to other countries. USA, UK, Canada, China, and Australia provide the same treatment for an average expense of $3000 – $7000.

The treatment cost for regular brackets with metal or ceramic cost around $2000-$6000.

They also mention that these prices may vary for each individual based on their alignment and the duration of the treatment.

ADVANTAGES:

  • It gives an aesthetic appearance as it is invisible.
  • It can be removed while eating; free from fear of wire or bracket is broken.
  • Reduced duration of the treatment compared to brackets.
  • Fewer dental visits.
  • Gradual tooth movement thus lesser discomfort compared to the traditional method.
  • Reduced periodontal risk (reduced risk for gum health).

DISADVANTAGES:

  • Expensive compared to the traditional treatment.
  • The material might break when undesired forces are applied.
  • Replacements are costlier.
