This is an annual plant highly known for its medicinal properties. It belongs to a species of shrub that’s native to the tropics. It grows in all parts of India. The name keezhanelli was given to it because it contains seeds under the leaves. It will grow like a weed in farming land.

Other names include stone breaker, gale-of-the-wind, seed-under-leaf, Quebra pedra, shatter stone, Chance Pierre. This is used as a traditional medicine for treating various illnesses. It also contains phytochemicals such as Lignans, flavonoids, triterpenes, sterols, alkaloids and essential oils. This plant contains several essential elements such as calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, ferrous and copper.

How to use Keezhanelli:

For Jaundice

Collect fresh leaves of the plant and wash them thoroughly to get rid of dirt and other unwanted particles. Mix the extract of the leaves with lemon juice and whey. Take this mixture orally. This solution is effective to cure jaundice. It also protects us from liver damage caused by hepatitis ‘B’ and ‘C’, an inflammatory viral infection of the liver.

For diabetes:

  • Diabetes can be controlled by taking dried keezhanelli powder three times a day before meals. The antioxidants present in it helps to improve fasting blood sugar level.
  • It also helps in preventing kidney and liver damage and preventing the need for dialysis. It can dissolve kidney stones because it is an alkaline herb that helps in dissolving acidic kidney stones and gallstones.

For gout:

Gout can occur when uric acid is built up in the blood. It helps to balance the uric acid levels. In addition, it helps in relaxing the blood vessels. Thus, reduce the blood pressure level.

Add two teaspoons of gingelly oil, keezhanelli root, cumin and milk grind finely and filter the extract. Drink the juice to cure chronic headaches.

Grind the keezhanelli leaves with salt and take a bath to cure rashes and scabies.

Hair oil preparation with keezhanelli:

Keezhanelli is a very effective ingredient in the preparation of hair oils.

  • Firstly, collect fresh keezhanelli leaves, curry leaves and Henna leaves in the ratio of 1:1:1. Then grind all these leaves as a thick paste without adding water.
  • Secondly, heat 1 cup of coconut oil then adds the thick paste to hot coconut oil. Then boil until the sizzling sound stops. Finally, boil it to the point where the water content is completely drained.
  • Subsequently, allow the oil to cool and strain it. This oil is helpful in preventing dandruff and hair loss.

For curing leukorrhea in women:

Leukorrhea or white discharge is a common issue women face before having their periods. To treat this, finely crush a handful of keezhanelli leaves. Then, add it to three glasses of water and simmer until it becomes one glass of water. Drink this both in the morning and in the evening to cure white discharge.

Side Effects of Keezhanelli

Like the many benefits it brings along, keezhanelli also has some side effects.

  • It can cause abdominal pain, painful urination, blood in the urine, and nausea in some people.
  • If you are taking medication for low blood sugar levels and low blood pressure levels avoid keezhanelli.
  • It prevents the blood clotting. So, people taking blood thinners should not consume this.
  • The effect of this in pregnant and lactating mothers are not studied yet.

Therefore, it is better to review our health condition before deciding to start any sort of therapy with herbs or medicinal plants.
