TONSILLITIS- THE INFLAMMATION OF THE THROAT

Tonsillitis is also called tonsil inflammation. Further, it is the inflammation of tonsils which are the oval-shaped pad tissues at the back of the throat, one tonsil at each side. Moreover, this condition can be caused by viral or bacterial (streptococcus) infection.

SPREAD OF TONSILLITIS:

  • Firstly, by saliva (sharing drinks)
  • And, by air borne respiratory droplets such as sneezing

SYMPTOMS:

Symptoms in adults,

  • Tender lymph nodes
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Swollen tonsils
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Bad breath
  • Stomach ache
  • Further, a nasal voice
  • Moreover, neck pain etc.

Tonsillitis symptoms in children,

  • Vomiting
  • Drooling
  • And, Refuse to eat or swallow

Moreover, tonsillitis is common in children. A person can get affected by this infection once in a while or again and again.

On the other hand, tonsils act as a filter that traps germs that enter the respiratory tracks and cause infections. But, sometimes these tonsils are infected by viruses or bacteria.

TYPES OF TONSILLITIS:

  • Its effect can be for 3-4 days or can be last for 2 weeks.
  • Chronic
  • It is a long period of tonsils infection.
  • Recurrent
  • This can occur several times in a year.
  • DIAGNOSING THE CONDITION:

    Firstly, tonsillitis can be diagnosed by observing the neck area and your throat, ear and nose with light instruments. Also, the doctor can take a throat swab to test against the streptococcal bacteria in the lab or clinic. Further, the doctor can do a CBC(Complete blood cells count) if needed.

    TREATMENT OF TONSILLITIS:

    Firstly, Treatment of tonsillitis includes home remedies or surgery. Secondly, we can do self-care by taking honey with tea, gargle with salt water, lots of rest, sleep, keep your home free from cleaning products that can cause throat pain, drink warm fluids, take plenty of water, take comforting food or beverages etc. Certain medicines can be used like analgesic, penicillin etc. Further, we can take penicillin orally for 10 days as prescribed by the doctor. Also, if you are allergic to penicillin, the doctor can give you alternate medicine. Moreover, in severe cases, the doctor suggests the removal of tonsils by surgery. Further, this surgery is called a Tonsillectomy.
